Summary
The project “Application of 3D LiDAR Point Clouds for Measuring the Efficiency of Solar Energy Systems (3D-SOLAR)” focuses on developing innovative methods for analysing, detecting and assessing the solar potential of urban rooftops using 3D LiDAR technology and advanced machine learning algorithms. Within the project, a proprietary database of 3D building point clouds will be created, including attributes such as colour, reflectance and temperature. In addition to LiDAR data, RGB and multispectral imagery of the same scenes will be captured to enable multimodal analysis. The project involves researching and developing methods for automated segmentation of solar panels, rooftop superstructures and roof surface orientation, as well as evaluating the performance of different compression standards (e.g., G-PCC, V-PCC, Unicorn) in data processing. Expected results include tools for assessing solar potential, improving efficiency in urban planning, and supporting the implementation of renewable energy sources. The project has high scientific and societal value, contributes to the goals of the green transition, and is fully aligned with principles of sustainable development.
