Summary
Walking, the primary mode of transportation in urban areas, is essential for health and sustainable development. This project explores the multiple benefits of walking, including numerous health benefits for individuals, and its key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving a carbon-neutral transport system. An analysis of the current situation in the Republic of Croatia, where 83.9% of trips are made by private cars (2023), highlights the need for a modal shift to walking. In line with the European Union’s goals, the project will explore ways to reduce private car use and promote sustainable mobility. The study focuses on the external costs of transport, demonstrating the economic benefits of walking compared to cars. In the European Union, car trips generate 12 Eurocents of external costs per passenger kilometre. By promoting walking, communities can save on these costs and improve the health of their citizens. The project also considers guidelines for mobility management at local and regional level, with a focus on improving urban planning and ensuring safe infrastructure for pedestrians, supporting the European Green Deal and the Strategy for Sustainable and Smart Mobility.
