Summary

The project “Economic Developments in the Croatian Lands in a Regional and European Context from the 17th Century to the Present Day” aims to examine long-term economic changes in the territory of Croatia throughout historical transformations by linking them to broader regional and European trends. Although numerous studies exist on individual aspects (agriculture, trade, industry, transport), there is a lack of a more comprehensive analysis that integrates micro- and macro-level approaches, and in particular an analysis that situates Croatian economic history within a Euro-Mediterranean context. The project will employ interdisciplinary methods, including archival research, quantitative analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and comparative studies with other European regions. The focus will be on: (1) agrarian transformation, the strengthening of non-agricultural activities (crafts, manufactories, etc.), and trade networks in the early modern period; (2) industrialization, deagrarianization (e.g. the collapse of viticulture in southern Croatia as a cause of emigration), and modernization in the 19th and 20th centuries; and (3) the impact of global crises and European integration on the contemporary economic structure of Croatia. The results will be presented through scholarly articles, symposia, edited volumes, and monographs. The project will contribute to the academic community through a systematic approach and comparative methodology, enabling an understanding of Croatian economic history within a broader regional and European framework and supporting the formulation of a national development strategy based on historical experience. The project’s innovativeness lies in the application of digital tools and a comparative perspective, making it unique within Croatian historiography.
