Summary

The project is based on investigating the role of BMP1 isoforms in the development of fibrosis in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), a rare scarring disease of the scalp whose pathogenesis and treatment have not yet been fully elucidated. Building on the research team’s previous findings on the role of BMP1-3 in fibrosis of the kidney, liver, heart, and skin, the project aims to examine the expression of BMP1 isoforms in affected and healthy scalp tissue of patients with FFA. Through histological and immunohistochemical analysis of biopsy samples, the study is expected to identify key molecules involved in the fibrotic response in FFA. The project also includes the application of high-resolution ultrasound diagnostics for quantitative assessment of the scalp. As part of the project, a two-year clinical study involving PRP therapy will be conducted, which may offer a safe and effective treatment option for FFA. This project takes a targeted approach to one of the key pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease, with the potential to transform the diagnosis and treatment of FFA and improve the quality of life of affected patients.
